Business Greater Hobart has been actively following the Collins Street bicycle lane trial and its impacts on businesses, road users and access to the Hobart CBD.
Two independent reports examining the trial have recently been released.
Post Opening Road Safety Audit – Trafficworks
Trafficworks undertook a post-opening road safety audit of the Collins Street bicycle lane trial. The audit reviewed the site and supporting documentation to identify issues affecting road-user safety and provides a series of findings and recommendations.
The audit identifies a number of safety issues across the trial area, with risk ratings ranging from medium through to extreme. For example, the audit gave an Extreme risk rating to the bus-turning arrangement from Barrack Street into Collins Street.
Collins Street Bicycle Lanes and Associated Infrastructure – Post – Installation Technical Review – Midson Traffic
Midson Traffic undertook a broader review of the trial approximately one year after it opened, examining cyclist volumes, traffic network performance, road safety, bus operations and environmental impacts.
The review concludes that the available evidence does not demonstrate that the trial has delivered its intended increases in cycling activity and raises concerns about road safety and traffic impacts. The report also notes limitations in the available data and the relatively short post-installation period.
